What We’re Learning

This week we talked about the Ten Commandments. These, as well as the Act of Contrition prayer, were sent home on Tuesday. We will be testing the class on memorization of the Commandments and Act of Contrition in a couple of weeks. Please have your child start memorizing them.

In Reading we’ve read a story which helped us practice determining cause and effect. We have also continued to use the strategy of context clues to define unfamiliar words. The bossy r has come back again, showing us that it will change the vowel sound.

In Grammar,  we’ve been practicing classifying prepositional phrases. Though it can be difficult, it has been going rather well. The class seems to be pros at classifying their sentences. We’ll be working with prepositions, object of the preposition, and prepositional phrases for a bit.

In Math, we’ve begun our double-digit subtraction unit. Most have the steps of subtracting but stumble over knowing the basic facts. Please continue to practice basic addition and subtraction facts.

We will begin to study our government in the next Social Studies unit. Along with this we will be researching a state of choice for our State-in-a-Box project (more information and directions about this project to follow soon.)

In Science, we’ve wrapped up our chapter on environments. The test on Chapter 4 will be next week, Wednesday, January 18. Please study over the long weekend. Remember the text is also online.

The next prayer that our classes will learn is the Act of Contrition.  This prayer will need to be memorized before making Reconciliation.

InReadingwe read a nonfiction story called Stirring Up Memories.  In this st0ry we practiced finding facts and conclusions.  We also reviewed prefixes.  Next week we will take our unit test. This is not a test that your child needs to study for ahead of time.

In Grammar, we continue to classify sentences, identify subjects, predicates, and determine singular from plural.  We will be learning a new song on prepositions.  We will also learn how to label the preposition correctly and find the object of the preposition.

In Math we are continuing to work with regrouping in addition.  We have learned how to regroup 3 two digit numbers by finding double facts and groups of ten.  We also have been working on mental math.  Please continue to practice your math facts each night! The Unit 4 test will be on Wednesday, December 21. Our next chapter in math will be subtraction.

The Social Studies unit on Goods and Services has come to an end. Room 109 has completed the chapter while room 110 will finish it the week of the 19th.  Our next unit in Social studies focuses on Government.

In Science, we began our new unit on animals and their habitats.  We learned how animals adapt to their environments.  We will be creating a habitat booklet that describes many different habitats and the animals that live in each. What We’re Learning

In Religion this week continued talking about Advent and how we are preparing for Jesus’ birth.  We learned a new song about staying awake and being ready.  We have also been learning about all the different people who share God’s love.  We have learned that single people, married people, priests, deacons, and religious brothers and sisters, all share God’s love in similar ways.

In Language we wrote our 3 paragraph expository.  This was the first essay that we have written, and it went well.  Students learned about indenting and creating paragraphs that focus on one idea.  This longer writing will prepare us for our upcoming changes in our journals.  After Christmas break, we will no longer be writing 5 sentences for journals.  There will be an 8 sentence requirement.

In Phonics this week we continued with soft and hard c and g sounds.

In Math we continue to work with regrouping.  This is a difficult skill for many students and at home practice would be appreciated. We will have our first test on regrouping next week.

Our Goods & Services project is due on Monday, December 5th.  Please be sure they are brought to school in the morning with your child on Monday.  Students will lose points if the projects are not turned in on time.  Next week, we will begin giving our presentations on our boxes.  Please be sure that your child is prepared to talk for 2 minutes on their store.

In Religion this week we reviewed all we learned this unit, from Sacraments to the Seasons Church Year.  Next week, we will begin looking at how we can share God’s love.

In Language we identified common and proper nouns. We are becoming experts at classifying our sentences, even as they become more complex.  Look for complete subjects and complete predicates to be labeled shortly. We have also looked at counting syllables, writing compound words, and soft c/soft g words.

In Math we have begun Chapter 10, which is adding double digit numbers with a single digit. We will progress to double digit addition soon after this. Knowing basic addition facts will help your child with the new skill.

This week in Social Studies we continue using our geography skills by looking at state capitals, continents, and oceans. Our Goods & Services project directions were sent home today. Please review the directions. Have your child know how they will present their store for the class. They will each have two minutes.

In Science, we finished our chapter on plants.  Our next chapter, chapter 4, is about living things in their environment. We will begin this chapter after the Thanksgiving holiday.

What We’re Learning

In Religion this week we learned about the Church calendar.  We discussed what we celebrate during each season.  Our next chapter focuses on Ordinary Time.  This is the church year that we are celebrating now.

In Language we focused on poetry.  This week we created a variety of poems.  We began the week with a haiku.  Although it is a short poem, we practiced carefully counting syllables to make sure each line uses the correct number.  After our haikus, we created a Thanksgiving poem and a sensory poem.  The Thanksgiving poem was an acrostic poem that used all the beginning letters in Thanksgiving.  Our sensory poem focused on a feeling.  We then used our 5 senses to describe the feeling.  Our final poem of the week was a shape poem.  The students chose a noun of their choice and created a list of adjectives that describe the noun.  Everyone really enjoyed writing our poems and reading different poems throughout the week.  Next week in Language, we will begin writing a three paragraph paper.

In Math we are wrapping up our chapter.  We practiced creating patterns by using growing patterns and repeating patterns.  We will complete this chapter last next week.

This week in Social Studies we continue using our geography skills by looking at state capitals, continents, and oceans. If you have an extra shoe box lying around, keep it, everyone will need one for this project. Please look for more information to be sent home on this project.

In Science, we are finishing our chapter on plants.  The test will be late next week.  Remember, the science book is online now.  Check it out to begin preparing for the upcoming test.

What We’re Learning

In Religion, we’ve begun looking more closely at the sacrament of
Confirmation. We learned about the symbols that are used during Confirmation.
Please remember to say your prayers each night with your child. Everyone should
be able to say The Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. We have noticed that
many students are saying incorrect words during the prayers. Ex. Instead of Thy
students say I and instead of us many say our.

In Language, we are working on long vowel words. Students have
been practicing one syllable words with two vowels. “The first vowel does
the talking and the second vowel does the walking.” We are also continuing
to classify sentences in Grammar. Everyone should be familiar with the four parts
of speech, noun, verb, adjective, and adverbs. These are helping us stretch our
sentences. Within Reading class we read about famous African American
inventors. This story helped us learn about comparing and contrasting. We also
continue practicing adding prefixes and suffixes to base words. Students have
learned when to add a consonant to short vowel words to keep them short. (stop
+ ing = stopping)

In Math we have begun our new chapter by looking at double digit
numbers. This chapter involves a lot of reviewing. We are using the same skills
that have already been learned, but now are using larger numbers to solve the
problems.

This week in Social Studies we completed our Unit on the Earth. We
will begin our next unit on Working Together. This unit teaches us about goods
and services. We will also learn about important community workers. At the end
of this unit students will create their own store with goods and services. If
you have an extra shoe box lying around, keep it, everyone will need one for this
project. Please look for more information to be sent home on this project.

In Science, we are looking at plants more closely. Within the
chapter, we will labels the parts of plants and discuss various characteristics
