Mulan Costume letter 2-24-10

Mulan Jr. Costumes

 Dear Parents,

Our 6th, 7th & 8th grade students are preparing for their production of Mulan, Jr to be performed on March 24th & 25th.  The play is set in ancient China.  The 6th grade girls are Chinese daughters and the 6th grade boys are Chinese soldiers.  The 7th grade girls are Chinese ladies and the 7th grade boys are Hun soldiers.  The 8th grade students are our featured players so they have a variety of roles.  The costume committee & I have done our best to simulate Chinese costumes by using items you already have in your closets.  We do not expect you to go out & buy costume pieces but ask that you please look in your closets and ask neighbors & friends to find these costume pieces.  We also ask that if you find several items that might work, to send them into school with your name in masking tape to share with other students that might be having trouble finding items.    Google Mulan if you would like a visual idea of Mulan costumes.

Listed below are the costume requirements for the various grade levels.  All costume pieces should have your name & room number in masking tape on the inside of the costume.

6th grade girls

Our 6th grade girls are Chinese daughters.  They should wear collarless, short or long robes in a silky or cotton material with a solid or floral pattern with silky or cotton pajama bottoms.  The robe & the pj bottom do not have to match.  No flannels please.   They should wear a white short or long sleeve t-shirt under the robe with flat shoes.  We will purchase Chinese fans for them.  They can wear their hair in any style. They can wear dark, flat shoes with white knee highs.

6th grade boys

The 6th grade boys are Chinese soldiers.  They should wear khaki pants and a beige or gray long sleeved t-shirt or sweatshirt with their school shoes & dark socks.  We will be making vests & sashes for them to supplement their look.

7th grade girls

Seventh grade girls are Chinese ladies.  They should wear collarless, short or long robes in a silky or cotton material with a solid or floral pattern.  No flannels please.  They will wear a white tee shirt and black leggings underneath the robes.  They should wear their hair up, if possible, because we will be putting chopsticks in their hair, which we will purchase.  They can wear dark, flat shoes with white knee highs.

7th grade boys

Our 7th grade boys are Huns.  They should wear their school pants and a black, long sleeved tee shirt or sweatshirt.  We will be making black vests & sashes for them.  Please wear your school shoes with dark socks & they will also wear black boot covers which we have.

8th grade girls

Many of our 8th grade girls are Chinese ladies, dressmakers or village women.  We will be making some kimonos for them but they should bring in collarless, short or long robes in a silky or cotton material with a solid or floral pattern if they have them.  No flannels please. They should also wear black leggings and white tee shirts underneath their costumes.  They can wear dark, flats.  They should wear their hair up so we can put chopsticks in them which we will purchase.  We will also purchase paper umbrellas for them.

 Ancestors

All of our ancestors will wear white or off-white robes.  The girl ancestors should wear white leggings and white tee shirts and white flats, white slippers or ballet shoes, if possible.  Our boy ancestors should wear black sweatpants and long sleeved black tee shirts and their black, school shoe with dark socks.  We will be adding gold cording to the robes which we will purchase.  We have a couple of the robes but please check to see whether you have a white or off white, collarless long or short robe.  We will also be putting white make-up on your faces.  Girl ancestors should wear their hair up & we’ll add chopsticks.

 8th grade Huns

Please wear your school pants and a long sleeved black tee shirt or sweatshirt.  Please wear your school shoes with dark socks & you will wear black boot covers, which we already have.  We will be making black vests & sashes for you & adding some fur & hats which we will provide.

Please wear khaki pants and a beige or gray long sleeved tee shirt or sweatshirt.  Wear your school shoes with dark socks.  We will be making vests & sashes for you.

 Mulan

We have many of your costume pieces already.  Please bring black leggings, a white tee shirt & black flat shoes.

Emperor, Fa Zhou, Chi Fu and Zhang

We have or are making your costumes.  Please bring black sweatpants, black long sleeved tee shirt or sweatshirt to wear underneath.  Please wear your school shoes with dark socks.

 Fa-Li and Grandmother Fa

We have your kimonos but please bring black leggings and a black long sleeved tee shirt.  Wear black flats.

 Mushu

 EXTRA ITEMS

We are looking for a variety of extra items & props if you have them & are willing to let us use them for the play.  Please put you name on it in masking tape & send to the Music Room or drop off at the school office.
