			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We had a great Catholic School&#8217;s week!   Challenging Religion Trivia every morning, pajama day, a Ramona movie with pop corn, and the great Red &amp; White Volleyball game.  Our Red team won which made it even better</p>
<p>Service: On Wednesday I sent home a note asking for chaperones to our March 29th field trip to Feed My Starving Children  in Aurora.  This is the trip for which I was awarded a Target Grant.  We need a 1/3 adults to children  ratio to be able to participate, so please consider joining us on this very worthwhile trip.  It was brought to my attention yeaterday that the woman, Mona Purdy, who founded the charity, Share Your Soles, which we just supported with our fantastic shoe drive and donation, has lost everything in a fire.  There is a website  collecting donations for  her in case you  feel like helping her out since she has spent her life helping others.</p>
<p>Reading:    This week we read and worked on activites with the novel, Ramona.; Age 8 by Beverly Clearly.  Next week we will return to our text.</p>
<p>Language Arts: We continue to practice language/ phonics skills daily.  Most everyone understands the  skills.  However not everyone uses them in their writing.</p>
<p>Math:  We just began the new math chapter of probability.  We will also continue to work on our multiplication facts until they are quick and automatic.  Please help at home to also increase accurancy and speed in your child&#8217;s ability to memorize the facts. There will be a SS math quiz on Tuesday.</p>
<p>Social Studies:  The President mobiles were all presented this week.  I was pleased that everyone  was able to learn about a particular persident and then share that information with their classmates. The mobiles looked great!  In our text we are studying why people move and intermediate directions.  The chapter 3 test  will be  on Wednesday or Thursday.</p>
<p>In Science we  will be starting chapter 7; Forces That Shape Our Land. This includes landforms, weathering, erosion,  floods, earthquakes, volcanoes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Our unit about winter, how animals live in winter, and how arctic animals live is finished for this year.  We can see how much the children have learned by their answers to questions, by their conversation and by their predictions when we read books about those subjects.</p>
<p>This coming week we will concentrate on Valentine&#8217;s Day and all the love and kindness that encourages.  Our party will be on Tuesday, February 14.  It will be low-key.  Please have your child bring in the bag with handles that was described in the newsletter last week.  Only 4 children have brought in bags so far and we will begin decorating them on Tuesday of this week.  Check last week&#8217;s newsletter for specifics.</p>
<p>This has been a very exciting week for the children with many different activities to celebrate Catholic Schools Week.</p>
<p>Next week our letter will be /v/.</p>
<p>We will be attending Mass on Monday this week at 9:00. Please encourage your children to have good behavior in church.  I am sure that when you take them to church yourself, you hear them singing some of the responses and saying some of the prayers. They are very proud of their participation.</p>
<p>Thursday, February 16 is a half-day of school. The children will be dismissed at 11:15 at the side door.  There will be no after care that day.  Parent teacher conferences will be that afternoon and evening.  We will be sending home your time on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. I am looking foward to meeting with all of you on 2/16. There will be no school on Friday, February 17 and Monday, February 20.</p>

<p>The students will continue with Chapter 15 learning about how to live out the Fourth Commandment.  <strong>The test on Chapter 15 will be Thursday, 2-9.</strong>  Then in Chapter 16, the students will learn what it means to live the Fifth Commandment by respecting all human life.</p>
<p> <strong>MATH</strong></p>
<p>The students will continue working with division this week.  They will learn to interpret remainders, regroup to find two digit quotients, and estimate quotients.  <strong>The test on Chapter 8 will be the week of 2-13.</strong></p>
<p> <strong>READING</strong><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>We will review on Monday for the <span style="text-decoration: underline">Because of Winn Dixie</span> test and the test will be on Tuesday 2-7.  </strong>Next we will be working on our Underground Railroad Unit for Black History Month. </p>
<p> <strong>LANGUAGE ARTS</strong></p>
<p>The students will continue to work on their poetry unit.  I continue to remind the students that they should be completing their final poem at home whether it is going to be handwritten or word processed.  <strong>The due date on the poetry book is Wednesday, 2-22</strong>.  The poetry presentation is on Thursday, 2-23 at 2PM. </p>
<p> <strong>SCIENCE</strong></p>
<p><strong>We will be review on Wednesday and Thursday for the Chapter 13 test, and the test will be on Friday, 2-10.  </strong>In Chapter 14, the students will be learning about light and heat.  They will learn how light behaves, how heat can be transferred and how is heat produced and used.</p>

<p>Wow!  What a week it has been! Have you been keeping up with all the excitement in kindergarten!?!</p>
<p>On Monday your child received his/her first report card. We look forward to discussing your child’s progress with you at conferences!</p>
<p>On Tuesday we went to Mass for Teacher Appreciation day. The children were all so kind—they had such nice things to say to their teachers!</p>
<p>On Wednesday, we celebrated the STUDENTS with Student Appreciation day. The students and teachers all wore their pajamas to school. It was so funny! In the afternoon, we were visited by our 8th grade buddies who brought a story to share with the kindergartners. Afterwards, we had a fun treat while watching the Bernstein Bears, TALENT SHOW on the smartboard.</p>
<p>On Thursday we had the kindergarten talent show. The children all did a GREAT job. We saw so much talent! Singers, dancers, magicians, football and hockey players&#8212;we are a talented bunch! We are just OKAY at some things and GREAT at others things. These are our God-given talents. Let’s share our talents with others! After the show, we discussed how we felt performing in front of our friends.  The children said they were nervous, scared, excited and happy&#8211;all appropriate emotions when doing something in front of a large group!  We were very proud of them.  They were surprised to see their teachers and principal have talents too!  Ask your child what talents they saw!  Thursday afternoon we learned how popcorn pops. Then we at the treat while watching a portion of Willy Wonka which is also the play the junior high kids are currently working on for the spring performance.</p>
<p>We wrapped up Catholic Schools Week with the Red and White volleyball games. It was such a fun week in kindergarten. Be sure to check out the website next week for pictures. Boy, Kindergarten sure does ROCK!</p>

<p>We will be celebrating our 100th DAY on Monday. We will do a lot of 100th day activities to celebrate this special day. Ask you child about his/her favorite!</p>

<li>Journaling: 2 + sentences</li>
<li>Word wall word practice</li>
<li>Guided Reading Groups (reading books at your child’s reading level)</li>
<li>Reactions: writing reactions to stories we read in class</li>

<ul>
<li>We continue to focus on ADDITION and creating number sentences. We drill the kids on adding doubles up to five. ( 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5). We ask the kids to explain the strategy they used when figuring out an answer. Give your child a problem. Ask your child to explain how he/she got the answer (counting on? Did knowing the doubles help?)</li>
<li>Number stories—tell a story and then figure out if we need to use addition or subtraction to figure out the answer 100 days of kindergarten!!! Do we look 100 days smarter!?! Counting by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;">Science: </span></p>
<p>Our senses help to keep us SAFE! How do they keep us safe? We will go through each sense and figure out how we use that sense to keep us safe.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0000;">Religion: </span></p>
<p>We will go back to our unit on the 5 senses. Our senses help us learn more about God’s world. Ask your child about our senses song (hint: I’ve got senses, I’ve got senses…”) and to name the 5 senses.</p>
